Головне

  • Set up Alipay and/or WeChat Pay with your foreign Visa/Mastercard before you fly - most shops, taxis and metros expect QR payments.
  • Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and most Western sites are blocked. Install apps and download maps/translations before arrival; foreign roaming eSIMs bypass the firewall.
  • Visa-free 30-day entry for most EU states, UK, Russia and others is a temporary policy (to 31 Dec 2026; Russia to 31 Dec 2027). Check it is still valid for your dates.
  • Drug offences carry extremely severe penalties, including the death penalty; positive drug tests (even for use abroad) can lead to detention.
  • Fill in the Arrival Card online before landing (s.nia.gov.cn or NIA 12367 app) to save time.

В’їзд і візи

Mainland China has a unilateral 30-day visa-free policy for ~50 countries (most of Europe incl. UK since 17 Feb 2026, Australia, Japan, Korea and others) until 31 Dec 2026; mutual agreements give Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and UAE 30 days (max 90 in 180). Russians get 30 days visa-free until 31 Dec 2027. Others (US, India, Ukraine, Turkey) need a visa, but citizens of 55 countries (incl. US, UK, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus) can use 240-hour visa-free transit to a third country via 65 ports.

  • Fingerprints are taken at immigration (ages 14–70).
  • Hotels register you with police automatically; if staying in a private home, register at the local police station within 24 hours.
  • Carry your passport - it is needed for trains, hotels, museums and SIM cards.

Митниця

  • Declare cash over CNY 20,000 or the equivalent of USD 5,000 in foreign currency.
  • Banned: printed or digital material deemed politically or religiously sensitive, maps showing borders differently from official ones, fresh fruit, meat.
  • Carry prescriptions; controlled medicines (e.g. strong painkillers, ADHD stimulants) may be refused.

Банкомати: Bank of China, ICBC and other major-bank ATMs accept foreign Visa/Mastercard; typical single withdrawal limit about CNY 2,000–5,000, plus your bank's fees.

Чайові: Not expected; tipping is unusual except for tour guides and drivers on organised tours.

  • Alipay and WeChat Pay accept foreign Visa/Mastercard after passport verification. Payments up to CNY 200 have no fee; above that a 3% fee typically applies.
  • Card terminals in big hotels, chain stores and malls take Visa/Mastercard; small vendors and taxis expect QR or cash. Carry some cash as backup.
  • Russian-issued Visa/Mastercard do not work. Some Russian-issued UnionPay cards may work in China but are often declined - do not rely on them; bring cash (USD/EUR/CNY).
  • WeChat Pay advertises a first-time foreign-card promotion: a 3% fee waiver for 60 days on eligible daily spending under CNY 1,000. Check the app for eligibility and caps.

Заборонено

  • Drugs (incl. cannabis and CBD): long prison terms, deportation; trafficking can carry the death penalty.
  • Unapproved VPNs are illegal under Chinese law; enforcement against tourists is rare but possible.
  • Photographing military sites, police, border areas or protests.
  • Religious proselytising and distributing religious or political material.
  • Flying drones without registration; banned in most city centres and near airports.
  • Public criticism of the government, including on social media, can lead to detention.
  • Fighting or disputes with police and officials can lead to detention and exit bans.

  • Overstaying a visa or visa-free period leads to fines, detention and deportation.
  • Exit bans can be imposed on foreigners involved in civil or business disputes.
  • China does not recognise dual nationality.

Культура та одяг

Релігія: Officially atheist state; Buddhism, Taoism and folk religion are common, with Muslim and Christian minorities.

Одяг: Casual clothing is fine in cities. Cover shoulders and knees at temples and mosques; dress modestly in Tibetan and Muslim regions.

Етикет

  • Avoid discussing Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang or Tiananmen with locals or in public.
  • Use both hands to give and receive business cards and gifts.
  • Do not stick chopsticks upright in rice.
  • Pushing in queues is common; stay calm and firm.
  • Do not give clocks as gifts; the number 4 is considered unlucky.

Інтернет: The Great Firewall blocks Google, Meta, X, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube and many news sites. VPNs are often unreliable and unapproved VPNs are technically illegal; roaming eSIMs are the usual workaround.

Здоров’я: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required when arriving from a listed risk country. Air pollution can be heavy in the north in winter; arrange suitable medical cover.
