Montenegro: was man vor der Reise wissen sollte

Das Wichtigste

  • From 1 November 2026 Russian, Belarusian, Turkish, Chinese and Saudi citizens need a visa (unless they hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit).
  • Montenegro is not in the EU or Schengen; days spent here do not count towards Schengen 90/180, and the EES does not apply.
  • Montenegro uses the euro, but cards issued in Russia do not work; bring cash or a non-Russian card.
  • You must be registered with the police within 24 hours (hotels do it; private hosts must too) and pay a small tourist tax.

Einreise und Visa

Montenegro is outside the EU and Schengen. It is tightening visa rules to align with the EU: from 1 Nov 2026 visas are required for citizens of Russia, Belarus, Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia, and in 2026 visa exemptions for Uzbekistan were suspended. Visitors must be registered with the police within 24 hours of arrival.

Gültigkeit des Reisepasses: Valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure is the safe standard.

An der Grenze kann verlangt werden

  • Register with the local police/tourist office within 24 hours; hotels do this automatically, private hosts must do it for you. Keep the registration slip.
  • Tourist tax (boravišna taksa) of about EUR 1-2 per night is charged by your accommodation.
  • Drivers need a valid Green Card (car insurance) or must buy border insurance.

Zoll

  • Declare cash of EUR 10,000 or more on entry or exit.
  • Carry prescriptions for medicines.

  • Bank ATMs (CKB, NLB, Erste, Hipotekarna).
  • Pay by card in hotels, supermarkets and city restaurants.

Wo man besser nicht wechselt

  • Independent ATMs in Budva and Kotor tourist streets.
  • Accepting conversion to your home currency.

Geldautomaten: Bank ATMs often charge foreign cards a few euros; withdraw larger amounts at once.

Trinkgeld: Around 10% in restaurants for good service; round up for taxis.

  • When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in local currency: dynamic currency conversion adds roughly 3-10%.
  • Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard cards do not work here; do not count on Mir either. Bring euros in cash or a card from a non-Russian bank.
  • Montenegro uses the euro without being in the EU or eurozone.
