The New Territories of Hong Kong were leased by China to the British in 1898. Largely rural and often ignored by travellers who have little time to spare, they offer a diverse landscape that takes time to get to know. Because this area is huge, every part is different. Most of the population live at the west and north. The eastern part is called Sai Kung, though the Chinese name literally means "west Kung". Mountainous country parks are located in here. The longest path in Hong Kong MacLehose Trail is located from Tuen Mun to Pak Tam Chung. You won't find many idyllic villages, but once you get over the stray dogs and chaotic streets, you will doubtlessly find something that will surprise and cause you to reach for your camera.
