Before you go to Vatican City: what to know

Must know

  • Check Italy’s admission requirements for the journey through Rome.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for museum and basilica visits; inappropriate clothing can prevent entry.

Entry and visas

Tourist access is through Rome, so Italy’s entry and stay rules apply to the journey. Admission to museums and religious sites is separate from immigration permission: use official bookings and follow security checks. No independent Vatican visa entitlement is asserted for any passport group.

Passport validity: For travel through Italy, Schengen documents normally need 3 months’ validity after departure and issue within the previous 10 years.

Money

Cash and cards are both common. Cards are accepted mainly in cities and tourist areas.

Apple Pay — works in some places · Google Pay — no data

  • Vatican Museums bookshops accept cash and credit cards, but not American Express, Diners or JCB. This is venue-specific; other outlets may differ.
  • Apple lists this country for Apple Pay with participating banks/cards; actual payment also depends on the merchant and card issuer.
