Before you go to Christmas Island: what to know

Must know

  • From mainland Australia, every passenger needs photo ID; a passport is recommended for possible overseas diversions. International arrivals follow Australian entry rules.
  • Pre-book transport: vehicles are limited and some roads close during the red-crab migration.
  • Follow island quarantine requirements even when travelling from mainland Australia.

Entry and visas

No separate passport or visa is needed for travel from the Australian mainland, but photo ID is required, including for children. For arrivals from outside Australia, carry a valid passport and the appropriate Australian visa where required.

At the border you may be asked for

  • Yachts must clear quarantine, customs and immigration before anyone disembarks.

Customs

  • Check island restrictions on food, plants and animal goods before packing.
