Before you go to Cocos (Keeling) Islands: what to know

Must know

  • From mainland Australia, photo ID is required for every passenger, including children. Carry a passport in case of an overseas diversion.
  • International arrivals follow Australian immigration rules; confirm the appropriate visa before departure.
  • Bring AUD cash: official pages disagree about ATM availability. Do not rely on cash withdrawal after arrival.

Entry and visas

Mainland-Australia arrivals do not need a separate Cocos passport or visa, but every traveller needs photo ID. Arriving from outside Australia follows normal Australian immigration rules, including a valid passport and the appropriate Australian visa where required. Keep accommodation confirmed and check your route’s clearance arrangements.

At the border you may be asked for

  • Yachts: notify Customs at least 96 hours before arrival; contact local police on VHF channel 20 and stay aboard until cleared.

Customs

  • Quarantine applies even on journeys from mainland Australia. Check food, animal and plant restrictions with DAFF before packing.

  • Most West Island businesses accept cards; bring small notes and change too.
  • Federal travel information says no ATMs; the 2026 tourism planner lists one at the Community Resource Centre. Confirm locally and carry enough cash.
  • Individual card networks, mobile wallets and ATM fees were not established.
